A Collision with the Past

I was doing what I often do when the weather is beautiful — getting my steps in by walking in the park near my home. There’s a large pond there, and when the sun is overhead, it warms your face like the heat coming off a roaring fire. The route is simple, predictable, nourishing and offers stimulating scenery. Three clean loops and I’m reset.

I was feeling grounded. Good. Second loop in.

And out of nowhere, I collided.

Body to body. From opposite directions.

An old flame.

My breath froze.

I was caught mid-inhale. My body tightened. Time slowed in a way that felt eternal, though it was only seconds.

I was stunned. And in that stretched silence, I couldn’t even think.

I’m pretty sure he said something, but I have no idea what it was.

Then I inhaled and regrouped.

Feet on the ground. Voice steady.

I mustered up a response – but something had already happened.

My body felt flooded with a history of familiar sensations.

When the Familiar Comes Calling

What was happening? I had grown, worked on myself, moved on.

The unexpected nature and proximity to him triggered an internal battle.

My body innately started running an old narrative. One that is spoken in bodily sensations — I felt a flutter in my chest, an impulse to lean forward, a quickening of my breath, a rush of energy.

But, I knew better.

A quiet but palpable tug-of-war began, between my young, conditioned self – still drawn to his familiarity, “familiar once meant safe” and the older, wiser self “my preservationist” who learned the art of discernment — the part of me that knows how to identify and track threat in real time.

My nervous system wasn’t being logical, it was being safe — following old wiring that once helped me survive, but no longer fits who I am today.

I couldn’t rely on that wiring anymore — it was familiar, but no longer trustworthy. Survival had shaped it, but discernment was now here to guide me.

Old Wiring Meets New Wisdom

The struggle was real. It left me uneasy. My preservationist stepped forward – stay grounded, move slowly, really listen.

This advice didn’t just come as a voice in my head. It was physically felt in my body as containment, limitation, guardedness — my breath and heartbeat slowed, I kept my distance, my voice responded but didn’t elaborate.

Wisdom was on board.

Mind you, this might seem as if this all happened in slow motion like the ending scene in the Titanic. But, nooo…the nervous system operates with lightning speed, most often outside of our awareness. So that’s why, before realizing, we do something again and again and then find ourselves scratching our heads about it afterward.

In the past, not heeding this advice had cost me time, clarity, self-trust, peace, and my health.

This process can stop you from living a full version of yourself. It can throw you off balance, rob you of peace and bait you into cycles of going nowhere — all on the premise of safety. The body truly is only set up to keep you safe based on what’s it’s been conditioned to believe. Its intent is to function as your ally, wise resource and guide. But, through no fault of its own, conditioning during formative years, lays down an unconscious template that we continue to use in the present, even when it doesn’t serve us.

Chemistry or Conditioning?

Often, we mistake these instinctual sensations in romance –- that feel magnetic — for chemistry. That spark isn’t always true chemistry; it can be a nervous system reflex. A conditioned familiarity. An old idea of safety.

Have you ever taken the time to trace what chemistry means in your body. What are the origins of your beliefs around chemistry? How did you experience chemistry in your youth? What were the examples you grew up with? What did you end of believing as a result?

In my case that meant a trauma bond — attaching to those that hurt me. Because, in my young mind the consequences of not attaching would’ve been far worse.

This Isn’t Just About Love

This process doesn’t just show up in relationships.

Because this wiring lives in the body, it doesn’t stay contained to romance — it shapes how we socialize, work, parent, heal and even lead.

We are living inside systems that endlessly trigger our nervous system without allowing the body restoration, space or perspective. Our bodies are flooded by headlines, feeds, politics, healthcare philosophy and hustle culture.

This is called dysregulation.

Dysregulation is a Cultural Condition

Dysregulation shows up in groups, families, workspaces, communities, nations -– living in chronic stress, threat, speed, scarcity or disconnection. And, then it gets normalized as ”just how life is”.

Dysregulation narrows us into reactivity. Shortening our patience, collapsing our perspective. Hijacking our choice.

It creates reactive systems across families, workplaces, healthcare, finance and institutions — systems that react to pain rather than building conditions that prevent it.

Reactive leaders do not build resilient organizations, they create burnout cultures and are often regulation failures, not strategy failures.

Regulation is NOT softness. It is a STRATEGIC advantage.

The Cost of Not Listening

Before I stepped onto this path, I was somatically illiterate — like so many of us.

I made choices that didn’t honor who I was — because I didn’t fully understand who I was.

That cost me.

In everyday life, this looks like staying too long, leaving too quickly, burning out, experiencing chronic pain or illness, shrinking to belong and silencing ourselves. Expansion or growth can feel dangerous when the body remembers that love, belonging and safety once came with conditions.

The Tool That Changes Everything

The turning point for me began with a simple tool: the pause. This is the difference between repeating and rewiring. Choice comes back on board.

The pause allowed me to interrupt the trigger of my old wiring without automatically being hijacked by it.

When I began choosing to pause. I had to sit and stay in the moment. While hard at first, the body responded. My body softened. Breath relaxed. Heart rate steadied. I had access to the full spectrum of cognition and choice.

Healing happens in that present moment. Not when we are thinking of the past or the future. But when we are sensing what is happening in the right now.

Over time, my ability to stay in the moment longer — my capacity — expanded.

Everything shifted. My system could hold polarities and complexities. This offered me the ability to observe, negotiate and decide what the right next move was. Not default to a pattern that was wired in me when I had less tools at my disposal.

Relationships became: “Do I want them? Do I feel good around them?”

Health stabilized. Decisions clarified. Uncertainty became tolerable. My work deepened.

The Questions That Matter Now

Somatic literacy is no longer optional. It is foundational for relational maturity and collective stability.

Regulated systems think long-term. Reactive systems think immediate survival.

The world will remain uncertain and complex at least for the foreseeable future. So, let’s reclaim our power and strengthen the inner wiring that supports steadiness, choice and connection. It begins with asking:

What has limited regulation cost you in your life, career and relationships?

Can your nervous system distinguish between present-moment threat and the imprint of past conditioning?

Feeling Disconnected

Even in our hyperconnected world, disconnection can creep in like an unwanted visitor. Our lives are filled with interaction – scrolling, replying, posting, pinging, attending meetings, crossing off to-do’s. But amidst all the doing, a deeper question arises: Do we feel Felt? Heard? Contacted? Do our nervous systems register, “I’m here. I matter. I belong”?

Connection is more than just interaction. It’s not just digital or verbal – it’s biological. It’s a nervous system state wired for presence, co-regulation and attunement. When words are exchanged but not felt, their impact fades, leaving us undernourished in a real embodied way.

When we interact without true connection, our nervous system responds. It’s as if we ate a meal but didn’t absorb any nutrients. In nervous system language, it leaves our bodies lacking a sense of safety satiation; unsatisfied, unseen, unmet. This can manifest as confusion, emotional emptiness or stress patterns that limit our authentic expression.

From Interaction to Connection

True connection begins with awareness — specifically, understanding and engaging with our nervous system. Understanding the role our bodies play in emotional and relational experiences. What if slowing down was the answer. Taking the time to learn what connection feels like — not just what we’ve been conditioned to believe it looks like.

The bridge between interaction and connection is built through the body — by reconnecting with our own sensations, emotions and needs. From here, our actions, words, and responses shift. We stop reacting and begin responding — authentically, compassionately and with greater relational presence.

As we connect more deeply with ourselves, we create a space for deeper and more meaningful connection with others. And so, it begins with us.

The SANCTUARY Practice

Embodied connection is a practice — one we return to again and again. Just as we wouldn’t sit at a piano and expect to play a classical piece without practice, we can’t expect to drop into relational connection without repetition, patience, and compassion.

Think of the following practice as a gentle map — a return to your inner sanctuary. A shift from autopilot interaction to nourishing, embodied connection;

S – Simplify – Connection doesn’t always mean more. Pause the need to fix, fill space or perform. Sometimes a moment of eye-contact, a breath, or shared stillness nourishes us more than hours of conversation..

A – Anchor – Let your body be lead. Feel the ground. Place a hand on your body – heart, belly or chest and check-in: Am I present? Is it safe enough to be real?

N – Notice – Shift out of auto-pilot. What’s alive in your body right now? Tension? Numbness? Warmth? Simply notice without fixing — honoring what is. This helps us increase capacity for whatever arises.

C – Curious – Be gently inquisitive. What might your inner experience be revealing? What’s needed? Curiosity creates spaciousness and interrupt habitual patterns..

In a world that rewards speed, surface-level and rapid-fire exchanges and digital exchanges, this idea is radical.
Connection is a human need and it deepens when the body feels safe enough to soften. When we tend to our inner sanctuary, safety becomes the soil And from there, true connection grows.

To inform and educate as to the vast manifestations and motivations of small business, and what each uniquely has to offer.

To provide an educational and relatable window into something new, highlighting universal trials and triumphs along the way.

To focus on the intuitive aspect of small business motivations and growth, and

To shine a light on Ambassadorship – how small businesses can mutually benefit through advocacy.

Georgette’s story is both intriguing and illuminating. Her journey began through a decade of trauma bookended by divorce, the loss of her mother and grandmother, a fractured cervical spine, radical surgery, and a long recovery. The passage was both physically and mentally debilitating. Discontent with the boundaries of allopathic medicine – yet resolute in her goal of wellness – she sought out alternate therapies to bridge the disconnect in her mind, body, and soul. Through personal healing, she opened the door to her intuitive passion: studying the art and science of Somatic Therapy.

I welcome Georgette to my small business spotlight, and am honored to bear witness to your honest, authentic, and thought-provoking responses to your five Essential questions:

Question #1: In your own words, what brought you to this line of work?

Georgette: Personally, I was on a quest for a better life. I gave serious consideration to going back to school for social work, and took some core courses at NYU. As my spiritual growth was outpacing my academia, it became clear that the confines of social work were not where my attention was needed. I remember it distinctly, feeling like a tugging in my heart as my intuition pulled me in another direction.

From that space I researched what felt right, leading to the inexorable conclusion I could no longer ignore my body at the expense of my mind. Somatic Therapy came into view, and it was like a lightning bolt, my a-ha moment. Then my education began in earnest. The body is so much more than a vessel, it’s the “black box” that stores all our experiences. Befriend our body, and we can recalibrate the mind. How could that not gain wisdom for us?

We have to learn how to communicate with our own bodies, which is something we have never been taught to do. This is the foundation of Somatic Therapy.

Question #2: Give us some background as to Somatic Therapy education and experience.

Georgette: It is a 3 year long program, of which I’ve just completed year two, of study, that includes webinar lectures, reading, experiential homework, reflection papers, practicums working directly on people, mentor sessions and personal somatic sessions.

Certification at each level involves a minimum of 25 practice clients, with several of them being recorded and submitted to be critiqued for improvement and passing that level of study.

– Please elaborate on the three training levels in Somatic Therapy.

Level One: The overarching goal is learning how the body is a reliable resource, ally, and guide for your life and how to tune into the sensations of the body as the communicators of its knowings. Each of our bodies
communicates differently, in a very individual and personal manner based on our life experiences.

Level Two: The focus here is on tuning into the body’s emotional channel. Resourcing the body for emotional competence. Learning how to befriend your emotions and recognize that emotions are a full-body experience. It is about learning how to tap into emotions, locate where they exist, what meaning they have, and how they can guide us. Essentially, our emotions are energy in motion – Everything we are is a physical manifestation of energy.

Level Three: In level three, the body remains the resource, but the focus expands to include an exploration of the relationships, both internal and external. You will recognize and help repair core beliefs, family of origin dynamics, and other relational injuries that are imprinted on the soma and the psyche. This helps in that you determine if that automatic wiring is working for you or not, and leverage your self-awareness to change that feedback loop – changing the way you show up in your own life. This is incredibly powerful.

One interesting and important note is that we are required to ‘walk the walk’ and do the actual sessions ourselves with an experienced somatic practitioner. This parlays into empathy and understanding in sessions with clients and allows me to hold a very supportive container for what they are going through. We are better for having navigated our own emotions or experiences that may be triggered through the work. It is critical that we as practitioners are always able to hold our own ground, which allows the skills of prosody, mirroring, gentle touch, and directive dialogue to steer the session.

Question #3: What has been your greatest challenge to overcome?

Georgette: Vulnerability and authenticity. I literally had to work through layers of conditioning that prevented me from being truly present in my own life. However, this has made me a better practitioner. I am not just saying these words, I have lived them. You CAN change the way you show up in the world, but the first step is building awareness of where you are right now. Tell me what’s worse, repeating the same old patterns and showing up the same old way or spending the time befriending your body to gain new perspectives to show up in a more expanded way. I know the latter may trigger fear, but that is just an illusion. What is on the other side of that is a freedom, ease, and grace everyone should know. I can guide my clients through that process because I have done it myself.

Question #4: What has been your greatest strength?

Georgette: The fact that I have given my clients the ability to have been heard and seen in the container I provide. Being seen offers us an authentic sense of who we really are, that is a true gift. The reward to me is immeasurable in a session that is intuitive, flows organically, and provides access through our bodies for whole, authentic healing.
.

Question #5: Who is your ideal client?

Georgette: I have always been a seeker, and always knew there was a healthier way to live, so I was going to do what I had to do to find it. My hope is that my passions speaks to the seekers out there, to let them know that I am here for them, have walked the path, and want to share everything that I have and am learning along the way. This is not about diagnosing anybody; this is about a collaboration for growth.

Georgette: My fantasy: It becomes a movement for people to step into a heart-centered reality, we can be heart warriors, and unearth the power that lies within our hearts. I don’t want to discount the mind, but the heart has an inherent ability to peel back layers, thus accessing enormous potential to positively influence the mind, and by mind I refer to the “embodied mind”. There is the capacity for this beautiful dance between the heart and mind to help us step into the best, most authentic version of ourselves. From there, what can be accomplished is limitless.

Do you ever feel lonely or disconnected? Well, if you do, you aren’t alone. It’s interesting that although we are the most technologically advanced we have ever been, we seem to feel like the most socially isolated people in modern times.

A world of increasing complexity and chaos

Being able to video call a friend or family member across the world in a completely different time zone would have been something out of a science fiction movie just a little over 20 years ago. Yet, more so than ever before, it seems like people are depressed, anxious, overwhelmed, and longing for a sense of connectivity with themselves and others that doesn’t feel possible. Today we live in a world of increasing complexity and chaos, making it hard to feel connected with ourselves, let alone feel a sense of connection with others and understand their perspective.

Understanding comes from the heart

In my experience, I’ve discovered that understanding comes from the heart rather than the mind. We want to feel more connected to ourselves, what we most value, and those we most love, and yet, we feel challenged to even come to a space of loving and accepting ourselves from a place of non-judgment. Love and acceptance start with us, and our devotion to these practices empowers us to create the foundation to begin to foster them with others.

Starting a Heart Revolution is how we will be able to build bridges of understanding between ourselves and others. We don’t want to get rid of the mind but awaken the heart so that the heart begins to influence the mind, and they can work together.

The heart has its own nervous system

It’s common knowledge that the heart is one of our most important organs. We literally wouldn’t survive without it. However, what most people don’t know is that the heart is not just a pump, it’s an epicenter of information and a communication conduit that has intricate wiring that spans throughout the rest of our body. The heart literally has its own nervous system.

According to the HeartMath Institute, “The heart is, in fact, a highly complex information processing center with its own functional brain, commonly called the heart brain, that communicates with and influences the cranial brain via the nervous system, hormonal system, and other pathways. These influences affect brain function and most of the body’s major organs and play an important role in the mental and emotional experience and the quality of our lives.”

The role of the heart in personal coherence

Becoming more heart-centered isn’t just an abstract idea. Tuning into our hearts creates a tangible physiological impact and can promote a foundation of increased physical health and wellness. The HeartMath Institute studies and others have shown that heart activity affects mental clarity, creativity, emotional balance, self-regulation, intuition, and personal effectiveness. When we become empowered to support our body, mind, and spirit in living synergistically with each other, we begin to understand what true wellbeing feels like at the deepest level. Practicing heart coherence techniques not only increases our own personal coherence but feeds into and influences coherence in the context of our families, work, and community.

Conclusion: The power for change is within our own hearts

If we really want the world to change and reflect a more loving and safer place for everyone, we need to learn how to tap into the power of our hearts to influence our bodies as well as our minds. Embracing our feelings as our built-in GPS system helps us recognize that our emotional layers have profound wisdom that can empower heightened awareness of ourselves and increase our capacity for connection with ourselves and the world around us.
Healing Isn’t A Linear Process (And That’s Ok)

Lately, I’ve been meditating a lot on the art of healing and what it means to truly heal ourselves. The process of healing is often spoken about as though it’s a straight line or a destination. We are told that we need to hit certain milestones to recover from whatever it is that we are going through. But, contrary to popular belief, the reality is that healing is not linear, It is messy and complicated, and it often looks different for each individual.

It happens in a spiral as we repeat our patterns

Healing is a journey into unchartered territories. It happens in a spiral, as we repeat our wounded patterns until we have integrated the lessons or awareness necessary to restore balance. We peel back the layers of our wounds to identify different aspects of the same wound, each time allowing us to identify another piece of the puzzle to wholeness. This process can’t be forced to resolution. As we spiral through each layer, we do not remain the same, we expand our understanding of the situation and of ourselves.

We often want to hop on the express train to heal town

When we are amid painful and uncomfortable experiences, we usually want to end our suffering as quickly as possible. As a result, we often want to skip over the tough, gritty, and painful parts by hopping on the express train to heal town. But it’s in this place, we must learn to sit and welcome our discomfort, rather than run from it. Allow things to move through us. This is where we find our capacities for real insight and transformation, and we come to see our wounds transform into our strength, resiliency, and wisdom.

The truth is that healing is vulnerable and requires a tremendous amount of courage. It takes profound bravery to fully feel and be open to learning to embrace the parts of ourselves that haven’t felt loved or accepted.

Voyaging inward is our reclamation

Learning to heal is to say yes to voyaging inward into communion with our deepest essence and most authentic self. It’s a reclamation of the dimensions of ourselves that have become lost along the way due to experiences far beyond our capacity to integrate and accept.

It’s a constant looking at things from a wider lens as you lean into a process of deep introspection about yourself and your larger journey. The more we can inquire into our own journey and confront the dimensions of ourselves and experiences that have historically been challenging for us to accept, the greater balance we can access and nurture within ourselves.

Healing brings balance and freedom

Healing work is all about becoming freer to be who you are. I’ve come to learn that true freedom for me is living in a state of balance that empowers me to thrive regardless of what might be happening in my life. We realize we’ve come to a deeper place of healing when things happen, and we don’t get completely thrown off balance. The things that used to trigger us no longer have the same impact. We can pause and be with what’s happening and decide how to best move forward from a place of intentional awareness.

In today’s world, many people are looking to become the conductor of their own healing and turning to somatic practices to support that path and live a more authentic life. In the world of holistic and alternative modes of healing, numerous modalities and approaches have been developed to begin to bridge the gap of understanding between the dimensions of mind, body, and spirit. Somatic Therapy is one such modality.

The Origins of Somatic Practices

While somatic practices have foundational similarities to the ancient practices of Yoga, Thai Chi, and Qigong, present-day Somatics refer to systems developed in the last couple of centuries. The field of Somatics has a wide reach of influence, including scientists, physicists, doctors, philosophers, psychologists, athletes, and performing artists. In many cases their exploration of the work grew out of a personal need for healing that otherwise couldn’t sufficiently be addressed by conventional methods.

In the 70’s, Thomas Hanna, a trailblazer in the field, coined the use of the term “Somatics” and attempted to create a common vision for the work. He expressed the work as;

“the study of the self from the perspective of one’s lived experience, encompassing the dimensions of body, psyche, and spirit.”

Hanna and many other early practitioners; Feldenkrais, Alexander, Gendlin, Rubenfeld, Trager, and Rolf, were way ahead of their time in bringing to light the mind-body connection that is now being backed up by science.

How Do They Actually Work?

While this can be the subject of many more blogs, the overarching idea is that these approaches tap into the inherent nature of our brain’s capacity for neuroplasticity. Learning to sense our experiences from the inside empowers us to stimulate a level of consciousness about our body’s automatic processes, which influences healing.

Benefits of Somatic Practices

There are several reasons to consider introducing Somatic Therapy into your own personal self-healing journey;

Develop your inner sensing to discover what is needed for your own healing

Understand your own safety system and how to self-regulate

Transcend how past traumas may limit your present-day well-being

Identify and express long held emotions and limiting beliefs

Expand your awareness to move from habit, to choice, to change

Experience more ease and freedom in your body and life

Open space for more peace and joy

Reconnect to the wholeness of your body, mind and soul

Science Backs It Up

Research continues to inform the field of Somatics;

Conclusion: Somatics is an essential tool on your journey to self-healing

Somatics is a hot topic, and more so than ever before, people are beginning to tune into somatic practices to help them heal and create a baseline of understanding for how they can best care for and heal themselves so they can live a more authentic life. Having a trained practitioner who can help you navigate the body and emotional layers is profound. It’s an art and craft that requires tremendous skill, devotion, mindfulness, and attunement to the body as an infinitely wise and complex ecosystem.
